Cancer Postponement with Radon

چکیده

Access to Energy has published articles about radiation hormesis for many years. Petr Beckmann even wore a vest filled with low-level radioactive material in order to illustrate this effect and to take advantage of its health benefits. Although there is a large and rapidly grow-research literature demonstrating radiation hormesis under many different conditions, the work by Bernard L. Cohen at the University of Pittsburgh on radon and lung cancer is probably the most spectacular. We first reported this in the Access to Energy article entitled "Vitamin R?'' in AtE 21, No. 4, p 4, December 1993. Cohen (who will be speaking at our annual DDP meeting to be held in San Diego on June 14-15) has continued to refine this work until it has become a giant, irremovable spike driven through the heart of the no-threshold linear hypothesis. Since this hypothesis is the foundation of virtually the entire antinuclear fear industry, Cohen's work is revolutionary. Without the no-threshold linear hypothesis, the enviro radiation bogey from fear of nuclear power plants to concerns about radioactive waste disposal becomes baseless propaganda. Moreover, since the antinuclear movement was the first of the great enviro success stories, the collapse of the credibility of this movement can seriously damage the effectiveness of current enviro propaganda in other areas as well.

Assessment of lung cancer risk due to indoor radon exposure in inhabitants of the state of Azad Kashmir Pakistan

Background: Several epidemiological studies conducted on underground miner’s show that exposure to elevated levels of radioactive radon gas is expected to increase the risk of lung cancer. Relative risk of lung cancer is almost linear with radon exposure. Elevated concentrations of radon are not only reported within mines but also for closed indoor environment of general public houses....

Investigating Indoor Radon Concentration Using CR-39 Detector; a Case Study of Gachin Dwellings in Hormozgan

Introduction: Radon is a colorless inert gas which decay products are the main component of natural radioactive elements that are naturally produced in under layers of earth crust by decay of radium and uranium. It enters through buildings via gaps and cracks. Radon gas decay products like alpha particle can increase the incidence of lung cancer in human. Since every person sp...

Indoor exposure assessment of radon in the elementary schools, Palestine

Background: Many public health agencies rank residential radon exposure as the second leading cause of lung cancer after cigarette smoking. It has been shown that the risk coefficient for lung cancer is higher for children than that for adults. Therefore, indoor radon measurements were carried out in the elementary schools of Tulkarem province, West Bank, Palestine. Materials and Methods: Two h...

Health Assessment Based On the Exposure of Alpha Radioactivity in Narghile Smoking

Introduction: Smokers and non-smokers are at the risk of developing lung cancer when exposed to alpha rays as a result of the relatively low levels of radium and radon that may be present in different tobacco species. There is a great interest in studies and research on the radionuclides in narghile tobacco emitting alpha particles to know the relationship between smok...

Indoor radon survey in Shiraz-Iran using developed passive measurement method

Background: While in the open air the amount of radon gas is very small and does not pose a health risk, in confined spaces, radon can accumulate to relatively high levels and become a health hazard. Exposure to high levels of radon has been associated with an increased risk of lung cancer, depending on the time length of exposure. Radon level in dwelling of Shiraz with 1,200,000 popul...
